Phase 2: Cover Letter

My paper described Code-Switching and its effects on colored people and anyone who has to do it. Code-Switching is when you switch up how you speak in order to appease the majority. As you can tell by the definition, you can already see how it would relate to colored people primarily; Where they need to use Code-Switching in order to appease White people when present inside of a predominantly white setting. My paper targets an audience that wants to learn about Code-Switching and its effects on the mind of those who do it. I believe that the paper is an informative piece aimed at those who want to learn about said topic. I believe it can also target those who have gone through such a thing, to which I believe it is pretty much everyone, as described in my essay, you code-switch without realizing it. It is something that I could say is somewhat relatable to others and if someone could touch on a time in which they code switched, it may possibly connect with them and they can empathize with those who went through the same thing. I didn’t really switch up my language to cater towards that audience, I explained the topic in which it needed to be explained. When writing this paper, I learned a pretty good amount of things when it comes to the idea of Code-Switching primarily. I didn’t know that Code-Switching had such a negative effect on a person. I also didn’t know there was a set emotion that can trigger code-switching. These are all the things that I learned while researching this paper and I feel it is pretty cool that I am able to share this information in my informative piece. This piece also helped with my informative writing and being able to research topics to build on ideas that relate to a set topic. I believe when it comes to this informative piece, I was most impacted by the idea of the evidential side of things. I thought it was quite interesting to use evidence from outside sources connected with the sources we reviewed in order to build on a certain idea. It allowed us to learn the difference between the different types of sources and what to and not to do when using evidence. We were able to learn about Scholarly evidence and Non-Scholarly and even completely outside sources that work with the topic at hand. It makes for more freedom when trying to express and connect a topic together. However, I’d say my only complaint is the heavy emphasis on Scholarly sources. Where I understand that, however, I believe that the amount of sources that are considered non-scholarly heavily outweigh those that are scholarly, and scholarly sources tend to be in books that you have to pay like 1000 bucks to read, which is a problem I ran into. This assignment allowed for me to connect with the course learning outcome of “Recognize and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations.” as the course learning outcome that connects really well with this assignment. I believe that with the introduction of distinguishing the different forms of evidence, we get an idea on how to further develop our papers and what forms of evidence to use to make sure our papers stay credible.
